UM Surabaya Lecturer: 5 Practices of the Sunnah of Eid al-Fitr for Muslims

Eid al-Fitr is a celebration for all Muslims around the world, rejoicing in the day of victory that comes after carrying out a full month of Ramadan fasting. Even though this year the celebration of Eid al-Fitr does not coincide, Muhammadiyah, based on the Decree of the Central Executive (PP) with the intrinsic reckoning of the hilal, coincides on Friday, April 21, 2022. Meanwhile, the Government, based on the Isbat Assembly, determines that Eid al-Fitr will fall on Saturday, April 22, 2023.

Regardless of the differences, all Muslims rejoice in welcoming the victory on Eid.

Lecturer at the Faculty of Islamic Religion (FAI) UM Surabaya M Febriyanto Firman Wijaya explained several sunnah practices that can be carried out and at the same time have religious value.

First, pay zakat. Happiness on the day of victory then there should be no shortage of Muslims and hunger. Therefore there are provisions for zakat fitrah so that everyone can feel happiness on that day.

Based on the hadith: "Indeed, every nation has its own holiday, and today is our holiday." (Narrated by Bukhari).

Second, take a shower before leaving for the Eid prayer. It is sunnah for men and women to clean themselves (bath) before the Eid prayer.

“This bathing time starts at midnight on Eid Al-Fitr until the sun sets the next day. It is more important to do it after dawn,” said Riyan Friday (21/4/23)

Third, eat before leaving for the Eid prayer. One of the guidelines during Eid al-Fitr is to eat before going to prayer, as a sign that the day is no longer fasting, as in the hadith of Ahmad's history "The Prophet did not leave early on Eid al-Fitr except to eat first, and did not eat on Eid al-Adha unless after returning home, then eat the results of the slaughter."

Fourth, put on the best clothes and perfume. Rasulullah SAW was ordered to wear the best clothes (not required to be new) on the two holidays, according to the Hadith narrated by Ahmad. And Rasulullah SAW also recommended giving fragrance to the clothes worn during prayer, as in the Hadith that was narrated by the Judge.

Fifth, distinguish the route to and from the Eid prayer.

There are 2 hadiths that narrate about the travel route during the Eid prayer, "That the Prophet saw, when he went out to pray the two holidays, he returned home via a different route from the previous path." (HR. Hakim). Meanwhile, Bukhari's history confirms that the return route and going to the Eid prayer place should be different, it is recommended that the departure route be longer than the return route.

Fifth, increase the reading of takbir. Takbiran as a term for reciting the Takbir on Eid al-Fitr is found in two opinions from scholars regarding the starting time of takbiran, which starts from the evening after sunset one day before the Eid al-Fitr prayer and in the morning when heading for the Eid al-Fitr prayer.

"Basically, both of them can be done in order to add to our wisdom in welcoming Eid al-Fitr," concluded Riyan.
