FAI UM Lecturer in Surabaya: Here's How to Pay Fasting Debts that Forget the Amount

The Central Executive of Muhammadiyah has set 1 Ramadan 1444 H to fall on March 23, 2023. The determination of the start of fasting by Muhammadiyah is based on the results of reckoning by the Tarjih Council and Tajdid PP Muhammadiyah.

Fasting in the month of Ramadan is an obligation for Muslims. The command to do fasting is contained in the word of Allah SWT in the Al-Qur'an letter Al-Baqarah verse 183 which reads: "O you who believe, fasting is obligatory upon you as it was prescribed for those before you so that you may be pious."

In every Ramadan there are certain groups of people who cannot carry out their fast in full. This is because of old age or certain circumstances that prevent him from fasting during Ramadan.

Thoat Stiawan, a lecturer at the Faculty of Islamic Religion (FAI) UM Surabaya, explained that people who are allowed to break their fast during Ramadan are people who are sick, on a trip, or women who are menstruating. However, even though they are allowed not to fast, these people must pay their debts at a later date outside the month of Ramadan. This fast is known as the qadha fast.

So what if someone forgets the fasting debt that forgets the amount?

Thoat explained, people who forget in worship, someone is ordered to take something more convincing. The basic rule regarding this is the words of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam regarding people who forget the number of rak'ahs when praying.

"If you have any doubts about prayer, he should throw away his doubts and take the one that is more convincing." (Narrated by Abu Daud 1024 and authenticated by Al-Albani).

“Similarly, people who forget how many days they are dependent on fasting, whether 13 days or 11 days, then what must be chosen is the one that is more convincing, namely 13 days. So choose the one that is heavier, because it is more calming and releases the burden of obligations, "said Thoat again.

Thoat explained, when he chose 13 days, even though he had an excess, the fast he did was not in vain and he still received a reward. It was different if he chose 11 days, there were 2 days that would make him doubtful.

"People who forget about the number of fasting days they are dependent on, he can estimate how much he owes, then immediately pay as much as he has predicted, until he is sure he has paid off his fast debt," Thoat concluded.
